Foundation: Rapid prototyping and building framework

Friday 11 November 2011

Today I finished integrating Foundation framework with my blog. Foundation describes itself as 'an easy to use, powerful, and flexible framework for building prototypes and production code on any kind of device'. And, as long as you have a knowledge of HTML and CSS, and at least a basic understanding of the principals behind responsive design, Foundation is very easy to use. Fortunately for me my blog had a simple design so integrating Foundation was a straightforward process. Resize your web browser and prepare to be amazed! ;)

Some of the features you'll find in Foundation include:

  • Eric Meyer's CSS reset
  • The grid - a layout framework that works on mobile devices and a range of desktop screen sizes
  • Buttons - a range of styles, sizes and colours
  • Forms - a range of styles including styles for validation messages
  • Panels - some nice boxes to stick content in (see my blog's sidebar)

Foundation also includes Orbit, a jQuery image and content slider that works nicely on mobile devices. However, Orbit doesn't appear to support lazy loading of images which would be useful on mobile devices where bandwidth is likely to be an issue.

Finally, the developers of Foundation are working on some interesting features for the next release, which include:

  • templates
  • site generation
  • more common elements
  • even better mobile support

There are a number of CSS frameworks available that support responsive design, but I'm very impressed with Foundation. :)
